My Summer Cosleeping Setup in Arizona: Simple, Safe, and Faith-Filled

When our Arizona summer temperatures start climbing—even before June—I find myself adjusting so much of our daily rhythm, especially at bedtime. As a mama who practices safe cosleeping, I’ve learned a lot about keeping my little ones cool, safe, and snuggled during those extra hot nights. If you’re expecting a summer baby or already have toddlers joining you at night, I hope this faith-filled guide helps you find peace of mind and practical ideas for your sleep setup.

💛 If you haven’t yet, I encourage you to read my general guide on safe cosleeping here: Safe Cosleeping: What Every Expecting Couple Needs to Know.

☀️ 1. Why Cosleeping Looks Different in the Summer

Summer in Arizona means indoor temps are often warm—even overnight—and air conditioning alone doesn’t always cut it. When you’re cosleeping with a newborn, a toddler, or both, safety and comfort look a little different in the heat.

With my 18-month-old, we keep things simple: just a diaper when she joins us in bed. For our newborn this summer, I’m planning a similar approach, adjusting based on room temperature, skin-to-skin needs, and breathable sleepwear.

🛏 2. Our Summer Cosleeping Setup

Here’s what helps keep our sleep space cool and safe:

  • A breathable, firm mattress (no memory foam or pillow tops that trap heat)
  • Cotton sheets only – we skip any extra bedding
  • A fan running near the bed to circulate air (never pointed directly at baby)
  • Our AC set between 74–76°F at night

🌿 Tip: Trust your instincts—if you’re warm, baby likely is too. Adjust layers accordingly.

🧺 3. Dressing Baby for Hot Nights

In cooler months, we dress babies for warmth. In summer, it’s all about minimal and breathable:

  • Newborns: A lightweight cotton diaper or open-bottom gown
  • Toddlers: Just a diaper and/or sometimes onesie (we do this regularly in peak heat!)

🙌 4. What About Skin-to-Skin in the Summer?

Skin-to-skin bonding is still so important—even during the summer heat. But that doesn’t mean you have to stay wrapped up in a sweat session all night long. One thing that helps me is laying side by side in the side-lying nursing position. We stay close enough for that comforting touch and connection, but with a bit of space to let air circulate between us. It’s a gentle way to maintain that bonding warmth without overheating—especially during those sleepy middle-of-the-night feeds.

🕊 5. Safe Summer Cosleeping: A Faith-Based Reminder

Motherhood can feel like a balancing act—especially when we’re sweating through it. But the Lord sees you, mama. Every adjustment you make, every gentle choice—He’s there. Summer cosleeping has its challenges, but also its sweetness: midnight nursing snuggles, the soft sound of baby breathing beside you, the way siblings crawl into bed like it’s their safe haven.

Let this season remind you: You were made for this.
